For companies that want to take advantage of all the benefits of working with the WhatsApp API, they should consider that WhatsApp charges for this. In general, they are quite low amounts for all the benefits that are obtained in return.

There are currently two ways that WhatsApp charges for using its API and it depends on the country with whom you communicate.

  • All countries (excluding Mexico)
  • Mexico

All countries (excluding Mexico)

The way WhatsApp charges for most customers is for the use of “Message Templates”. These messages with templates are basically messages pre-approved by WhatsApp for your company and are used mainly to be able to contact a person 24 hours after their last message or to start a conversation with someone who has not previously contacted the company.

If a customer initiates a message with your company, you will not be charged for any messages (including templated messages) that you send to that customer until 24 hours after the last message that customer sent (“Customer Service Period”). Any additional messages you send to that customer beyond the customer support period must be a template-based message, for which you are charged as stated in the rate card.

For example, let’s assume someone from Brazil writes to you. Once your message comes in, you pay nothing. Let’s say multiple messages are sent during the day. Up to that point you still don’t pay anything. Now, after 24 hours from the last message from the client, you want to write to him. For that you must use a “Message Template” and it will cost you US $ 0.0473 to send that message according to the table below.

México

WhatsApp is testing a new payment system in Mexico. This system is based on paying for “Conversations” instead of paying for “Message Templates”.

WhatsApp defines a conversation as a 24-hour session of unlimited messaging between a person and a company. The 24-hour chat session begins when:

  • A company-initiated message is sent to a user, outside of a 24-hour period.
  • A business response to a user message is delivered within the 24 hour window

When companies send messages to users (template-based messages), this will start a conversation, regardless of whether users reply to that message within the next 24 hours. There is no limit to the number of messages that a business and a user can exchange in a single 24-hour chat session.

Prices for Mexico

Businesses will receive 1,500 free conversations each month when they message users with phone numbers from Mexico. Any conversation beyond the first 1,500 messages sent to users with Mexico phone numbers will be charged at a rate of $ 0.014 per conversation.
